Can I email or text you?
I only use text messages and email for appointment-related matters, such as scheduling appointments or to inform each other if we are running late for an appointment. This is to avoid the risk of a breach in confidentiality. Therapy issues are not discussed through texts or emails.
Social Media Policy
Due to confidentiality, I do not friend or otherwise connect with current or former clients on social media. This is due to the possibility of compromising and blurring the lines of our therapist/client relationship and confidentiality. In addition, messaging through social media is not a secure form of communication, as a result I will not respond to any messages that clients send to me through these avenues. Also, please be aware that there is a risk of a confidentiality breach if you choose to follow my professional social media pages, engage with them, (via “likes” or comments), or leave comments on my blog. If you decide to engage with my social media or blog, or if you choose to write a review about me online, please be mindful of what you say and the risk of exposing that you are my client.
Phone Call Policy
If you would like to speak with me in between our scheduled sessions, you may call me. I will do my best to return your call within 48 hours during business days. Be aware that calls longer than 10 minutes will be treated as a therapy session and will be charged at a prorated rate of my fee every 15 minutes. If phone calls become frequent between session (e.g. more than once every other week), I will suggest that we address these issues during more frequent sessions so that I may better address them.
What about confidentiality?
Therapy is a safe and confidential place to work through challenges. We all have challenges in our lives. All visits and records are confidential. No one will be informed about your participation in counseling without your specific request in writing for a release of information.
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client.
However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. Exceptions include:
- Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
- If a client intends to harm herself or himself. The therapist will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken.
If you have further questions about confidentiality, or any of our policies, they can be discussed in person on your initial visit.
